01年の最新作『ヒアズ・トゥ・シャッティング・アップ』から４年、未だ長い長い活動休止中のＵＳインディーロックの至宝、スーパーチャンク。アルバムリリース後の来日公演は、ベテランならではの余裕と、まるで10代のバンドのようなはじけっぷりが同居していて心底痛快だった。そんな印象深いステージの記憶を思い返しながら活動再開のニュースを密かに待ってる人も多いだろう（と思う）。しかし４年っていったら柔ちゃんの苗字が変わり、しかももう一枚金メダルとっちゃうくらいの長さであり、日本にスーパーチャンクを招き、件の来日公演の際に実現させたナンバーガールがとっくに解散しちゃっているくらいの長さなわけで、そろそろ我慢の限界に達しつつあるファンが続出しているはず。
待望の活動再開はまだまだらしいが、スーパーチャンクの首謀者マックのソロプロジェクト、ポータスタティックのアルバムが到着！いままでは宅録ユニットという印象が強かったが、今回はスーパーチャンク風味のバンドサウンドで、間違いなく全チャンクファンのハートを鷲掴みまくる一枚。とはいっても、スーパーチャンクよりも王道アメリカンロック的な土臭さが感じられたり、メロウなナンバーが多いなど、独自の味わいも楽しめる。
今作にはスーパーチャンクのギタリスト、ジムもベースで全面参加している。それなら早くスーパーチャンクやってくれよと言いたくもなるが、今はマックの甲高いボーカルが久しぶりに聴けただけでとりあえず満足。これを聴きながら再開を気長に待つことにしたい。
